Final Design/Evaluation

       








      The purpose for this assignment was to allow our editing skills to flourish and to also recreate a mundane item into an entirely different entity. This is by enhancing base colours such as Beige and Black to show a shadowed effect onto the product as well as changing the consistency of the brightness and the background.

     Pop art came about near the 1950's and flourished into it's own in the 1960's with the wave of new revolutionary artists and photography, such as Andy Warhol and Tom Wesslemenn. the main purpose was to break the mold and have low value art become accessible to the higher classes by making it more palitable to the higher social standards as well as having the high value art be a lot more interesting to the lower classes.The images that inspired me was Anthony’s Warhol image of the president of china altered to disgrace him, he made it when President Nixon left to speak with President Mao during the cultural revolution. He did this to oppose the Communist Propaganda Machine. For the features of Pop art it is full of bright colours that stands out, it is also full of energy. Another artist I’d spent time researching was Idelle Weber, who was famous for the Pop art around silhouettes and she used different colours to outline the silhouettes. This enforced the idea that if I would add few blotches of black onto the product as an outline to other colours that it will stand out twice as much. Finally I've researched both Joe Tilson and Tom Wesslemenn, they both use a heavy approach when it comes to Pop art with them using a select few colours and having the saturation of the colours to a really high standard. They did this because they'd always had the colours overlapping and creates a nice looking image. Thanks to all of this research I'd gotten a rough idea on how I wanted to present my final design, I wanted it to be instantly recognizable as well as something that fresh and have never been seen before. To do this I would have to plan out my time effectively by creating a proposal that would state what is needed and how i would go about collecting each of the pieces. I had to also plan around other people since we only had a limited number of cameras  so we would have to be quick another problem is that there is also a total of three red heads so we didn't get enough light to produce a quality image and the natural  lighting wasn't enough to get rid of the shadows. My idea did match up with my proposal since I've been successful in matching up my idea to my final design since the product is a Pip-boy, which is a recognizable item within the gaming world and I've added a fresh new spin to it by having it highlight other features of the product by shading it in. I did a high ISO since we were taking images of a singular product that's stationary so there will be no need to to rush, so i decided to put the ISO on the lowest it could get 80. This allowed to get as much detail into the shot as possible, so this also means I would put the camera on a wide aperture and a slow shutter speed. The location is within the class room and so the natural lighting would take away some shadows while we can remove the rest with the red head light.

For the editing techniques I used was replacing the white background with with a pattern of black and yellow since they contrast with each other nicely, another technique was using the paint bucket to have the patches of the Pip-boy covered in black. I've also altered the base image into a yellowy orange, as well as adjusting the the exposure with the curve tool.

The image I've have created can be improved since there seems to be a cut off point where the product wasn't in frame also the exposure wasn't over bearing to the point where it wouldn't be see it, in all I'm extremely happy that it ended the way it did.

Did your photography effectively meet the requirements of your proposal and the brief? Are they fit for purpose? Yes my photography fit the requirement since all of it was done by myself and I didn't have any external help from the teachers or the internet. However I would frame the shot more since it seem off on the paper also i would have more variety within my final design to get rid of stagnant ideas.

Q1 – Detail two reasons why we change the ISO

The first reason on why we change the ISO is because if it is too high then we wouldn’t gain any of the detail within the image while if the ISO is too low the image will have unwanted as well as unnecessary detail.

Q2 – Explain the difference in depth of field between a wide and a narrow aperture

The difference between the different apertures is that the large aperture allows for more light to pass into the camera so it allows the background to come out clear while a small aperture allows for more attention to be draw to the main subject because the background would be a blurry wall

Q3 – List four consideration you had to take into account when producing your pop-art photography. For example, depth of field, shadows etc.)

I had to take to natural light that would the windows, another consideration would that since the entire group would be here and since we a have a limited number of red heads so at best we will only get one. The next one would the fact that there will be almost four people in each group so I will be working on the clock as to get through and in turn that will help others

SAM_0322. This image has been set at an ISO of 100 and the source light had been placed to the left of the product, the white balance has been set to day light because of the natural light coming through the windows as well as the Red Heads. The thing that became clear would be 2 feature of this image came out wrong, the 1^st problem would be the excess of dead air on the right side of the picture and the 2^nd would be the amount of shadow that was caste.

SAM_0320. This image had also been set at an ISO of 100 to capture as much detail as possible. The reason behind the position of the camera would be because I wanted to show as much of car as possible this includes the interior of the car. I had to place the red head at an angel to place the most amount of light onto the car so I chose to place the Red Head near the front left head light to make most the shadow move towards the back. The problem with this image would that there is very high exposure near the top of the image.

SAM_0330. This image has been shot with an ISO of 80, this is the lowest ISO on the camera. I did this because I was also using an app on my phone to make the product come to life so I had to get even the most minuscule of detail. The white balance hasn’t changed from the last contact sheet so it’s still on the day light setting. If I had to say anything bad about this image it would be that my phone doesn’t really fit the Pip Boy so you can see some of my phone within it.

Research

Pop art orginated in the 1950's and flourished in the 1960's. Mainly in America and Britain pop art drew inspiration from the popular and commercial culture that was around at that time.The use of Pop art is to take mundane objects that were mass produce such as can of tomatoe soup and improve its splender, in lamen terms its used to blur the bounaries between 'high' art and 'low' culture.You can also use Pop art as adverstiments, Billboards and street art:
High Art is art appercaited by people with a more refeined heratige or cultural tates while Low Culture is every one can enjoy it no matter what their socail class is.

Some famous Pop art were;Joe Tilson, Andy Warhol, Idelle Weber, and Tom Wesselmann. these famous people were reknowed for their images.

Pop art constitutes present day items presented in a new way. For example a Marmite jar has been around for years and is now a staple of the present day.Pop art was used for advertisement, memorials and a way of speaking out. The product that needs a Pop art image would be Reggae Sauce since it was created through investments from a tv show called Dragons Den

Proposal.

 My visual product will be a poster with nine images on it and each of these images are going to have different colour backgrounds and the product will be different colour in each of the images.The thing I would need to take into account when creating this poster would be how I set up the red heads since I wouldn't like to have any visable shadow on the product. I'll be using a low ISO in this photo shoot since it will allow me to get as much detail as possable. For saftey I will be putting the camera on a tripod since it will keep the camera in place and I can change the setting of the camera without the postioning of the camera changing. I will bring in some different objects to take images of and then i will make a contact sheet and chose the best one to do the final edit with. Then I will place the final design on a pice of A2 black card and then show it at a presentation to the rest of the class and talk about what went well, what didn't and what you can improve on.
